natural gas emergencies
Recognize the signs of a gas leak and be prepared for an emergency.
- If you suspect a gas leak, move to a safe location and call 911. After you’ve called 911, notify your property manager.
- Keep yourself safe with See, Smell, Hear, Leave, Call.
Do I have a gas leak?
- Do you see…
- A white cloud, mist or fog?
- Bubbles in still water?
- Blowing dust
- Dead or dying plants
- Do you smell…
- A distinct rotten egg-like odor?
- Do you hear…
- Unusual roaring, hissing or whistling?
If you think you have a leak…
Leave –>
- Immediately move to a safe location. Don’t start your car, turn on any electronics or lights, or light any matches.
Call 911 –>
- Don’t assume someone else made the call. Be prepared to report your location, including cross streets, and to provide the 911 dispatcher with information about the leak.

- Smoke
- Light a match
- Open doors or windows, including the garage
- Use your landline or cell phone
- Switch appliances on or off
- Use a flashlight
- Start a car
- Attempt to make repairs to the leak.
