natural gas emergencies

Recognize the signs of a gas leak and be prepared for an emergency.

 

  1. If you suspect a gas leak, move to a safe location and call 911. After you’ve called 911, notify your property manager.
  2. Keep yourself safe with See, Smell, Hear, Leave, Call.

 

Do I have a gas leak?

  1. Do you see…
    • A white cloud, mist or fog?
    • Bubbles in still water?
    • Blowing dust
    • Dead or dying plants
  2. Do you smell…
    • A distinct rotten egg-like odor?
  3. Do you hear…
    • Unusual roaring, hissing or whistling?

 

If you think you have a leak…

Leave –>
  • Immediately move to a safe location. Don’t start your car, turn on any electronics or lights, or light any matches.

 

Call 911 –>
  • Don’t assume someone else made the call. Be prepared to report your location, including cross streets, and to provide the 911 dispatcher with information about the leak.

Remember, Do NOt –>
  • Smoke
  • Light a match
  • Open doors or windows, including the garage
  • Use your landline or cell phone
  • Switch appliances on or off
  • Use a flashlight
  • Start a car
  • Attempt to make repairs to the leak.
